In April 2003, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME) partnered with AQAF (Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation), the quality improvement organization for Alabama as designated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to introduce the Alabama Practice-Based CME Network. This network was developed to:
- Support the efforts of AQAF to improve performance on process level health indicators in diabetes care and mammography screening
- Provide practice-focused CME tailored to needs expressed by individual physicians
- Provide access to resources that will assist physicians in caring for complex adult patients
Physicians today are challenged to provide better care for their patients while attempting to save time and money. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) can enhance access to patient information, decision support and reference data, as well as decrease the likelihood of errors. Effective implementation of an EHR however, takes more than just purchasing and installation.
AQAF, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, is providing support for small and medium-sized primary care practices as they implement or more fully utilize their EHR system. AQAF is not a vendor of EHR products and does not endorse any vendor.
